the economist published an article last week grouping fair trade in with organic farming and local production and made a pretty solid economic argument against the lot...
still, i think it's a bit unfair to group this triad of "political food" issues together. yeah, there are problems with the economics of fair trade (creating an imperfect market - know of any perfect ones? and passing most of the consumer premium to the retailer, not the farmer.) still, i'd hate to see the ends ignored because there are some problems with the means. gotta work on those means. just not at 2am...
